Are phone baby monitors reliable?

Updated 7 November 2026

A phone can make an excellent baby monitor, but it isn’t a closed box built for one job. Wi-Fi drops, cables get knocked out and phone calls take over the microphone. A phone monitor is only reliable if it tells you when any of that happens.

What can go wrong, and what to look for

The Wi-Fi or internet drops

Routers restart and mobile signal comes and goes. A monitor that freezes on the last picture is dangerous, because it looks like a sleeping baby.

Look for: an alarm when the live picture or sound stops. Sleepybo sounds one within seconds, even with your phone locked and on Silent.

The camera phone loses power

A cable gets pulled out, a socket switches off, an old battery gives up.

Look for: a low-battery warning, and an alert that doesn’t depend on the app being open. If the Sleepybo camera stops checking in, our server alerts every parent about a minute later, even if Sleepybo is closed on your phone.

The microphone stops

On iPhone, a phone call, FaceTime or Siri can take the microphone away from the camera app. The picture keeps going, but there’s no sound.

Look for: a warning when sound stops. Sleepybo tells you straight away and takes the microphone back when it can.

The phone gets too hot

Streaming video all night warms a phone, and old phones more so. iPhones protect themselves by slowing down or stopping.

Look for: lower quality before the phone overheats. Sleepybo lowers the picture and tells you. Battery saver mode helps too. Take off thick cases and keep the phone out of the sun.

You don’t hear the alert

A notification is no use if your phone is on Silent or in Do Not Disturb.

Look for: an alarm that plays in Silent mode and shows on the Lock Screen. Sleepybo also keeps a Live Activity on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island while you watch, so you can check the status at a glance.

Phone or dedicated monitor?

Dedicated audio and video monitors usually talk to their parent unit directly, without your Wi-Fi or the internet. They are simple and dependable, but their range ends at the edge of the house or garden, and good video ones cost a fair amount. A phone monitor costs nothing if you already have a spare phone, works from anywhere and can be shared with family. In return it relies on Wi-Fi and power, so its warnings matter more.

What no monitor can do

Sleepybo shows and plays what the camera sees and hears. It doesn’t track breathing, heart rate or movement, and no app or monitor prevents sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The best protection is safe sleep: on the back, in a clear, flat cot. See Safe to Sleep for guidance.

How to make any phone monitor more reliable

Sleepybo is a monitoring aid, not a medical device. It doesn’t replace adult supervision. For safe sleep advice, see Safe to Sleep or ask your health visitor or paediatrician.
